Yoga practices are used to develop and sustain health and well-being in the body and mind. When taught with an open, kind approach, sustaining the attention on present moment experiences, “yoga is meditation” (Kabat-Zinn, 2005). It encourages enhanced awareness of events in the present moment and the cultivation of compassion, open heartedness and friendliness brings an overall sense of well-being.
Mindfulness programmes such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction include:
- Mindful movement taught in the form of traditional yoga postures, Hatha Yoga, that cultivate strength, balance and flexibility.
- Mindfulness meditation, sitting practices used to develop mindful awareness. Ways to enable to body to alert and steady during this practice are also taught.
- Body Scan, a practice that is similar to a simplified version of Yoga Nidra, a yoga practice done lying down. As with other mindfulness practices, the attention is sustained on present moment sensations in the body.
Yoga with Mindfulness classes are held at the Corporation of London Communitiy Education Centre, on Wednesday evenings, 6 to 7:30pm. For more information call the Adult Skills and Education team on 020 7332 3918 or 7608 2753 or email adulteducation@cityoflondon.gov.uk.
